Il est parfois utilisé par les chercheurs et cité en référence dans la bibliographie d'ouvrages (Cf "l’invention de l'Islam" par Michel Orcel). Le site se définit lui-même comme un site proposant des réponses aux questions posées par les orientalistes ou les "chercheurs" Chrétiens.

It includes archives, maps, manuscripts, sound recordings, photographs and much more, complete with contextualised explanatory notes and links, in both English and Arabic.

The Islamic Manuscript Association is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting Islamic manuscript collections and supporting those who work with them. It was formed in response to the urgent need to address the poor preservation and inaccessibility of many Islamic manuscript collections around the world.

En 1990, l’Unesco a déclaré Tombouctou site du Patrimoine Mondial en reconnaissance de sa signification en tant que site architectural d’Afrique, et de l’érudition de son passé. En 2003, "The Tombouctou Manuscripts Project" , partenariat Sud-africain Malien a été officiellement lancé. L’accomplissement majeur de ce projet a été la construction d'une nouvelle bibliothèque, inaugurée à Tombouctou en janvier 2009. "The Tombouctou Manuscripts Project" de l’Université du Cap (UCT) est spécialisé dans l’étude de divers aspects de l’écriture et dans la sauvegarde des manuscrits de Tombouctou et de l'ensemble de l'Afrique.
